Banana Iced Coffee With Instant Coffee
This banana iced coffee combines a small serving of strong instant coffee with freshly blended banana milk. Half a ripe banana gives the drink body without making a whole glass of smoothie. You need a blender, a heatproof cup and a tall glass; an espresso machine is not required.
Dissolve the coffee separately before blending the banana and milk. That keeps gritty granules out of the drink and gives you a chance to cool the coffee before it reaches the ice. This version has no cream topping or banana syrup. Its sweetness comes mainly from the fruit, with an optional teaspoon of maple syrup if the finished drink needs it.
Recipe development note: This formulation has not been kitchen-tested. Cooking and preparation times are estimates; follow the stated texture checks and product instructions.
What to use for instant coffee and banana milk
Use plain instant coffee rather than a premixed sachet with sugar and creamer. Two teaspoons make a fairly strong base, but brands differ. If your coffee package recommends less for a cup, start with that amount and adjust the next glass.
A spotted banana blends more smoothly and tastes sweeter than a firm one. Weighing out roughly 55 g is helpful if your bananas are unusually large. Using a whole banana changes both the thickness and the balance of coffee to fruit.
Choose a milk you already enjoy cold. Dairy milk, oat milk and soy milk will give different textures and flavors; they are not nutritionally interchangeable. Shake a milk alternative before measuring, and keep it cold until you blend.
Making the drink in four steps
Step 1: Dissolve and cool the instant coffee
Put the instant coffee in a heatproof cup and add the hot water. Stir until no granules remain. Let it cool for about 5 minutes, or stand the cup in a bowl of cold water to cool it more quickly. It should no longer be steaming when poured over ice.
Step 2: Blend a small batch of banana milk
Place the peeled half banana, cold milk and optional vanilla in a blender. Blend for 20–30 seconds, then check for pieces and blend again briefly if needed. Taste the banana milk; add the optional maple syrup only if you want more sweetness.
Step 3: Put coffee and ice in the glass
Fill a tall 16-ounce glass with about 3/4 cup of ice. Pour the cooled coffee over it. Leave enough room for the banana milk. If your glass is smaller, use less ice or divide the drink between two glasses.
Step 4: Add the banana milk and stir
Pour the banana milk over the coffee. Layers may show briefly, but stir before drinking so each sip has both coffee and fruit. Serve immediately. If the drink feels too thick, stir in 1 tablespoon of cold milk at a time rather than adding more banana.
Fixing a thick, gritty or separated drink
Blending the banana with only a splash of milk can leave stubborn pieces around the blade. Add the full measured amount and pause to check the texture. A small blender may work better for a single serving than a large jug whose blades sit above the ingredients. Mashing with a fork is an option, but it will leave a visibly pulpy drink.
Some settling is normal because banana pulp is suspended in the milk. Stir again as you drink. A hard layer of coffee granules points to incomplete dissolving, whereas soft flecks are more likely to be fruit. Preparing the two components separately helps you identify which needs attention.
Adjusting sweetness and coffee strength
For a milder glass, use 1 teaspoon of instant coffee in the same amount of water. For a decaffeinated version, use plain decaf instant coffee. To try cinnamon, blend one small pinch into the milk. Avoid adding several flavorings at once until you know how much banana and coffee you prefer. A frozen banana will make this thicker and colder, closer to a blended drink.
Preparing and serving banana coffee fresh
Blend and assemble just before drinking for the best texture. If you need to prepare the banana milk ahead, cover it, refrigerate immediately and use it the same day. It may darken and settle, so stir or briefly blend it again. Keep the coffee separate from the ice until serving. Do not leave milk-based drinks at room temperature for more than two hours, or one hour in temperatures above 90°F/32°C.
Questions about banana iced coffee with instant coffee
Can I make this without a blender?
Mash the banana very thoroughly and whisk it into the milk, then assemble the drink. It will be pulpier than the blended version. Straining can remove larger pieces but will also reduce the banana body.
Is banana iced coffee the same as a coffee smoothie?
This version uses a small amount of fruit and pours the coffee and banana milk over intact ice cubes. Blending the ice and coffee with a whole banana would produce a thicker smoothie-style drink.
Can I replace instant coffee with brewed coffee?
You can use 1/4 cup of cooled strong brewed coffee instead of the instant coffee and water. The flavor and strength will differ. A large volume of ordinary brewed coffee will change the ratio and may need a larger glass.
